IASCA Takes on Springfield
posted: May 17, 2019
IASCA headed down state on April 24th to host the 2019 Springfield Conference. The conference provided an opportunity for our members to network with colleagues, learn from industry experts, and advocate for ASCs at the State Capitol.
The day began with morning educational sessions. The first session, Are You Still Smoking in the OR? It's Time to Clear the Air, was presented by Penny Smalley. Penny is a consultant at Technology Concepts International who specializes in laser safety. Attendees learned how to identify hazards associated with surgical plume and discussed the regulations that apply to the management of surgical plume. Following Penny was a session on Falls Management and Safe Patient Handling presented by Barb Pusateri of Medline Industries. In her presentation, Ms. Pusateri helped attendees create policies that integrate safe patient handling and falls management and provided tools to create a culture of safety at each attendee’s facility.
The latter half of the focused on advocacy. Brian Henderson, IASCA Government Affairs Specialist, led a review of IASCA’s priority advocacy issues and provided an introduction to advocacy. The presentation included discussions on workers’ compensation, physician presence, and surgical privileges. State Senator Steve McClure also joined the conference to give a brief update on legislation in Springfield. After Senator McClure’s remarks concluded, attendees visited the Illinois Capital to drop off issue briefs on IASCA’s advocacy priorities at legislators’ offices and were treated to a behind-the-scenes- tour of the House Floor.
